Normally, the sebaceous glands in the skin release a thin film of oil to create a protective layer against irritants. People who lack this protective layer suffer sensitive skin, making them prone to symptoms like skin dryness or flaky, red, tight and overwhelmingly itchy skin. This condition can also lead to breakouts, red patches or rashes. Sensitive skin is a common skin type and problem that makes a person prone to allergic and irritant reactions when exposed to elements that normal skin types usually tolerate. People with sensitive skin are more likely to develop rashes and inflammation in response to the pollutants and allergens found in the external environment. Its symptoms include reddening of skin in blotches, painful rashes, skin tightness, itchiness and visible broken veins, which are usually seen on the face or cheeks, hands, legs and arms.

A lot of factors contribute to developing sensitive skin. One of which is genetics. When your parents have experienced or are currently managing sensitive skin, you are likely to develop this seemingly chronic skin problem. Also, suffering hereditary conditions like eczema and psoriasis may account to this skin problem.

Stress and heavy pollution are two things that you can never avoid having or encountering in this life. This explains why these two are considered the main triggering factors of sensitive skin. Stress disturbs the balance in your hormone levels and in the release of your brain chemicals. Clearly, it runs havoc to your body. Expectedly, your skin will react. People who experiences itchy skin and skin rashes under pressure have sensitive skin. On the other hand, exposure to harsh environmental elements like heavy pollution also triggers signs of sensitive skin. Whenever your skin gets exposed to traces or smokes of noxious gases and builds up dirt and dust, it inhibits the functions of the sebaceous glands. This makes your skin lose its protective film of natural oil as the pores get blocked by dirt buildup. Similar effects where observed with the heavy use of cosmetics. Dust and thick layers of makeup can aggravate pre-existing sensitive skin conditions as they block the skin glands and cause irritation.

If you are constantly exposed to things that you are allergic too, your skin can get so sensitive. It could be your soap, your makeup, synthetic fibers on your clothes or the food you eat. As a rule of thumb, people with sensitive skin or people who want to avoid having sensitive skin must stick to cosmetic and personal care products that do not use chemical additive and synthetic ingredients. Stay away from products that are laced with fragrances, which might cause flare-ups.

Sensitive skin also has something to do with aging, weather conditions, frequent bathing and bad dietary habits are triggering factors. Over time, your skin will naturally lose its natural capacity to hold moisture, making it prone to dryness and sensitive skin symptoms. With age, hormone problems may be suffered, which affect the production of the oil on the skin. Weather conditions like the dry air during winter and dry heat during summer can also increase your chances of developing signs of sensitive skin. This is because extreme weather conditions tend to disrupt the skin’s natural mechanism of maintaining moisture and producing protective layer of oil.

Hence, the answer to the question "why is my skin so sensitive?" is around you. Thankfully, there are products especially made for sensitive skin care regimen.
