Sensitive skin is a lay term used to describe a skin type that is prone to having allergic reactions or skin irritations with contact to ingredients or elements like detergents, cosmetics and alcohol, which most people can tolerate. It is a term that also describes a thin and fine-textures skin, which quickly reacts to the effects of heat and cold. This type of skin easily gets sunburn or windburns and is usually dry and delicate. They easily develop redness, rashes and other unsightly signs of allergic reactions.

To prevent the onset signs of allergic and irritant reactions, managing the needs of your sensitive skin is imperative. Though there are a number of intensive and invasive treatments that you can undergo to solve this problem, nothing beats classic prevention schemes. To prevent the symptoms of sensitive skin, you need to avoid the activities, conditions and environmental factors that lead to flare ups. Hence, people who are prone to sunburns and windburns must apply the at least SPF 15 sunscreens to get effective skin protection against the sun’s UV rays. Avoid eating foods that cause allergic reactions or tends to make sensitive skin symptoms to worst. Stay away from eating packaged foods or junk foods to avoid possible allergic reactions to artificial flavorings and chemical preservatives.

Limiting exposure to possible allergens is arguably the best solution to managing sensitive skin. But that does not necessarily mean that you should lay low on using skincare and cosmetic products. Thankfully, there is a new range of natural and organic personal care and cosmetic products that are perfect for sensitive skin use. Although these products are relatively more expensive, quality natural and organic personal care products like lotions, moisturizers and bath soaps do not contain harsh chemicals that usually harm people with sensitive skin. Also, organic and natural based and earth-toned makeups are gaining raves lately for their hypoallergenic properties.

To care for your sensitive skin, use warm or tepid water when washing your face or when bathing. Use products that contain certified organic and natural ingredients. As a rule of thumb, avoid cosmetic products or makeups with too many ingredients and with fragrances. Avoid exfoliating your skin. Use only mild cleansers and soaps, which are specially formulated for sensitive skin. If your skin is particularly sensitive to weather elements like dry heat and sunlight, invest on a good quality sun block creams and lotions.

A proper skin moisturizing regimen is helpful in soothing sensitive skin reactions. Regularly applying a thin layer of moisturizers formulated for sensitive skin will not only keep the skin protected, soft and supple, it will also prevent the skin from drying out especially during summer and wintertime. Keep the skin properly hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water each day. A properly hydrated yet sensitive skin is a lot easier to manage.

Clearly, you need to pay more attention to your skincare regimen when you have sensitive skin. It is important to choose the right skincare products to use. Do not get easily lulled into buying cheap products that uses confusing claims like "pure" and "natural". Always check the label of the products you buy. One way of effectively preventing products that contain harsh ingredients, try using authentic organic and plant-based skincare products to get more natural, allergen-free and chemical-free solutions to managing your sensitive skin.
